Learner Support Services

Premium Health provides support services for learners enrolling into all its training courses.  The nature of the support depends on an assessment of individual learner’s needs and their extent and ranges from trainer support where a person has a physical disability requiring some environmental modifications to enable participation, to professional assistance with learning where a learner is challenged in the areas of language, literacy or numeracy (LLN).

It is best to identify support needs prior to training

If you know of anything that might prevent you (or one of your employees if booking for a group) from progressing through training and assessment, we invite you to tell us when booking.  This information will remain confidential and our Training Manager will contact you to discuss requirements and develop a strategy within Premium Health’s capacity to provide such services.  It may be necessary to arrange referral to an outside agency in the case of LLN.

Support may include providing:

  • Physical modification for the practice and performance of CPR and other skills
  • EA reader or computer technical assistance for a learner with a visual disability
  • An interpreter/signer where a person has hearing disability
  • An oral assessment for a learner with language or literacy challenges

Workshop training/enrolment forms

At the commencement of training workshops, trainers invite participants who require additional support to tell them personally or to record that information on the enrolment form.  Trainers’ ability to meet individual requirements there and then will depend on the nature and extent of the person’s needs.

Following an assessment if the assistance is beyond a trainer’s capacity or the training timeframe, the learner will be referred to the Training Manager and training rescheduled for a later date.

Training approaches used include:

  • Lecturing, discussion and group work
  • Skills demonstration and practice
  • Critical incident and scenario analyses
  • Self-directed reading and excercises
  • Audiovisual aids and course notes and
  • PREMIUMHEALTH© CPR training method

Adult learning principles guide the application of these approaches and respect for the learner is paramount.

Assessment Process

In each course, the assessment process focuses on the practical demonstration of skills, and the underpinning knowledge required demonstrating your competence.

Assessment takes place during your course enabling you to demonstrate your competence in a comfortable and familiar environment with your trainer/assessor. The nature of all assessment tasks, times and place of assessments are agreed beforehand and clear written information is given.

Assessment is never a pass or fail process. You are simply judged to be Competent or Not Yet Competent.  If you are considered Not Yet Competent, your trainer/assessor will advise you or your workplace coordinator of further training tasks or options you may need to undertake to gain competence.

Support During Training

We believe learning should be an enjoyable and challenging process for students.  Each person's need for support differs both in terms of its timing and nature and we will help you identify and establish the abilities, skills and knowledge necessary for you to achieve success in your training.

Trainers' qualifications -

All PREMIUMHEALTH trainers/assessors have appropriate qualifications and technical expertise in the course you are undertaking. They will help you identify your training goals, provide training, monitor your progress and undertake your assessments.

Trainer/assessors can help you with the following:

  • Any issues or concerns you have regarding your training
  • Provide access to other learning materials and resources
  • Liaise with PREMIUMHEALTH staff to report on you progress towards the achievement of your Statement of Attainment.

Training needs and goals - trainers will help identify training needs and goals and discuss your training options.  At the outset of each course, training approaches, course competency standards, assessment requirements, course evaluation, and achievement of a Statement of Attainment are explained thoroughly and information provided.

Learners partnership with trainers - throughout a course, you will be encouraged by your trainers to identify personal learning requirements, to share relevant first aid and other experiences, as well as express training interests, anxieties and needs.

Learners' individual differences - our trainers will select training methods that provide maximum flexibility and encompass different learning modes.  Where someone has difficulty reading, writing or understanding English or has some other disability, training approaches are varied to support learning and facilitate a fair assessment of competencies.  To enable this to happen, it is important that you tell the trainer of your needs.

Training methods - through class, and small group discussions, critical scenario simulation, workbook exercises and sustained practice you will be supported in learning the skills and underpinning knowledge to competency standards.  In the teaching of rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) competencies, the PREMIUMHEALTH© method is used. This unique and innovative training technique uses familiar rhythms to help you recall and perform CPR correctly.  Research shows that the PREMIUMHEALTH© method enables people to recall and retain their CPR skills for a longer period of time.

Training resources - key resources are available to support training, including individual resuscitation manikins and masks, first aid equipment, up-to-date audio-visual aids, course-specific workbooks and/or handouts, and reference texts.

Customer service - We offer you an on-going service in relation to first aid information.  You are invited to call our office with any queries or concerns you may have.  We may not have the answer but we do have access to a variety of resources and we will do our best to assist you.

Onsite training - Training can be conducted at your venue, please print off the Training Facilities Checklist (click here) to ensure that your venue is suitably arranged..
