Description
This unit of competency provides participants with the knowledge and skills to provide an advanced first aid response, life support, and manage the casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance. This unit incorporates the content of HLTFA404A Apply advanced resuscitation techniques.

- Assessment of an emergency situation
- Assessment of a casualty’s vital signs
- Basic anatomy, physiology & toxicology
- Recognition and management of an unconscious casualty
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (variations for adults, children and infants)
- Chain of survival
- Advanced resuscitation techniques including the use of bag valve mask device, AED, manual and oxygen powered suction devices
- Assessment of need for and obtaining emergency services or medical assistance
- Coordination of first aid activities until arrival of medical/emergency assistance
- Cultural sensitivity
- Incident communication and documentation
- Evaluation of the incident
- Critical incident stress management
- Legal and social responsibilities of a first aider
- Material safety data sheets
- Occupational health & safety requirements in the provision of first aid
- Safe storage and handling procedures for pressurized gases
- Use of AED, oxygen, bronchodilator
- Incident management procedures including manual handling; hazardous substances, dangerous goods or chemicals
- Basic triage for a multiple casualty incident
Entry requirement
Participants must be able to demonstrate the competencies defined by the unit HLTFA301B Apply First Aid.
Trainer/Assessors
PREMIUMHEALTH provides trainers who are registered nurses or ambulance officers that have at least Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.
Assessment
Students’ performance in relation to the course’s competency elements is assessed.
Award
A Statement of Attainment is issued on successful completion of this course and is current for three years.
