A Statement of Attainment is issued to participants upon successful completion of the units assessment requirements.

Description

This unit of competency provides participants with the knowledge and skills to recognise and respond to life threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only.

  • Assessment of an emergency situation
  • Assessment of a casualty’s vital signs
  • Chain of survival
  • Recognition and management of casualty’s first aid needs including:
    • Reassurance and comfort
    • Infection control as it relates to standard precautions
    • Unconsciousness
    • Choking/airway obstruction
    • Respiratory distress including asthma
    • Cardiac conditions – heart attack, chest pain
    • Casualty with no sign of life
    • Bleeding
    • Shock
    • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) adults, children and infant variations
    • Assessment of need for and obtaining emergency services or medical assistance
  • Understanding the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Duty of care requirements
  • State/territory regulations, legislation and policies, ARC Guidelines
  • Incident communication and documentation
  • Critical incident stress management

Assessment

To be judged competent in this unit, participants are required to:

  1. Demonstrate competent CPR performance on an adult/child and infant manikin in line with the CPR checklist
  2. Participant in 2 first aid problem-solving scenarios and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills specified for the unit.

6.5 hours trainer-facilitated workshop format. 

Trainer/Assessors

PREMIUMHEALTH provides trainer/assessors who have a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and experience as highly skilled nurses or paramedics.
