IEMR ACCREDITATION
(Immunisation Emergencies Management and Resuscitation)

Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to recognise and manage immunisation adverse events, assesses current CPR competencies within an immunisation context, and provides knowledge about establishing and maintaining an appropriate emergency response system and equipment.  

Content Overview

  • Assessment of the emergency situation
  • Assessment of vital signs
  • Recognition and management of immunisation adverse event including:

    • Anaphylaxis
    • Shock
    • Fainting
    • Seizures
    • Hypotonic/hyporesponsive episodes

  • Rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - adults, children and infant variations
  • Assessment of need for and obtaining emergency services or medical assistance
  • Adrenaline administration and additional resuscitation techniques for use in managing anaphylaxis
  • Incident communication and documentation
  • Emergency procedural planning
  • Developing an immunisation emergency policy and plan
  • Emergency equipment - selecting appropriate equipment  – sole immuniser and immunisation team kits
  • Resources for emergency resuscitation procedures and equipment.

Option 1
IEMR Accreditation
1 Day Training Workshop & Assessment
Cost:
$220 per person

The one day training workshop option suits students who prefer a trainer-facilitated learning environment and interaction with nurse colleagues. Approaches include discussion, questioning, and critical enquiry activities using immunisation emergency scenarios, demonstration and skills practise relating to CPR and adrenaline administration and concluding with a multiple choice assessment. The intent is to develop further students’ capacities for making sound clinical judgments within critical time frames and working dynamically and collaboratively with the trainer to achieve competency and build confidence.

Option 2
IEMR Accreditation - Online
Online Learning + 2.5 Hour Face-to-Face Assessment

Cost: $220 per person

The online learning program is suited to e-learners. The best part is you choose when and where you study online. A study kit is sent to you upon registration into the online course. The innovative, stimulating and interactive program leads you through the knowledge required to manage immediate adverse immunisation events using structured critical incident, decision-making exercises, and quizzes. A multiple choice assessment completes the online component and it is followed by a short face-to-face assessment.

Entry requirements

Participants must be enrolled in the Nurse Immuniser Accreditation Program at La Trobe University. Further information about this program can be viewed at the La Trobe University School of Nursing Website by clicking here.

Trainer/Assessors

PREMIUMHEALTH provides trainers who are registered nurses or ambulance officers that have at least Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.

Assessment

Students’ performance in relation to the course’s competency elements is assessed.

Award

A Statement of Attainment is issued on successful completion of the CPR competency unit and is current for 12 months and a Statement of Participation is issued on completion of the overall IEMR Accreditation Program.

This unit provides Nationally Recognised Training within the Australian Qualifications Framework.

The program is consistent with the Immunisation: National Guidelines for Immunisation Education for Registered Nurses and Midwives (Commonwealth of Australia, 2001) and successful completion of the program partially fulfils the Government of Victoria, Department of Human Services’ Nurse Immuniser Accreditation requirements.
