A Statement of Attainment is issued to participants upon successful completion of the Course's assessment requirements.

Course Description

This short course is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to enable you to assist a casualty suffering an asthma attack in the workplace and administer either the casualty's own asthma bronchodilator medication or the organisation's asthma first aid equipment.

VU20011 unit

• Signs and symptoms of asthma - mild, moderate and severe
• The potential consequences of an asthma attack
• Common allergic and non-allergic asthma triggers
• First aid principles and procedures in relation to the causes, symptoms and treatment of asthma
• Documentation required for recording emergency incidents
• Asthma Action Plans for individuals and Asthma Emergency Management Plans for organisations/workplaces
• Develop risk management strategies for the emergency management of asthma
  

Assessment

To be judged competent in the unit VU20011 Manage asthma emergencies, participants are required to:

1. Demonstrate competent performance administering asthma reliever medication.
2. Participant in 2 first aid problem-solving scenario and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills specified for the unit.
3. Complete knowledge questions.
4. Complete an incident report.

Course Duration

Standard: 3 hours face-to-face training

Online: Personal study around 2 hours plus 1 hour face-to-face

OPTION 1 - STANDARD

This program option is intended for first-time learners and first aiders who prefer a training workshop learning environment.

Your trainer works with you and the group, progressing systematically through the course content, drawing on past knowledge and skills. 

A variety of training approaches including class and small group discussions, first aid critical incident scenario simulations, workbook exercises, sustained practice skills, and relevant audiovisual materials are used to support your learning through to the achievement of competency.

OPTION 2 - ONLINE

This online learning program is suited to e-learners and can be completed at your own pace with only a one hour face-to-face workshop session. The delivery is innovative, stimulating and interactive. This course is suited to beginners and those wishing to update their knowledge in anaphylaxis first aid.
