The 21659VIC Course in first aid management of anaphylaxis is a nationally recognised short course comprising:

  • VBP434 Provide first aid management of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • VPAU320 Develop risk minimisation and management strategies for allergic reaction and anaphylaxis

These two units may be undertaken separately.

Award

A Statement of Attainment is issued to participants upon successful completion of the Course's assessment requirements. Where only one unit is undertaken a Statement of Attainment will be issued listing the unit attained.

Course Description

This short course is designed to develop skills and knowledge to enable you to assist a casualty suffering a severe allergic reaction, by the administration of the casualty’s own adrenaline supply through a controlled dose injecting device (Anapen or EpiPen), until the arrival of medical assistance. In addition the course develops skills in the recognition, management, prevention and risk minimisation strategies related to allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, providing the outcomes required to develop and implement a management plan to reduce the risk of severe reactions in individuals diagnosed with anaphylaxis.

  • Assessment of the situation and recognition of anaphylaxis
  • Provision of appropriate first aid treatment for an anaphylactic reaction
    • Comfort and reassurance to casualty
    • Access and assessment of resources and equipment
    • Administration of adrenaline and appropriate first aid
    • Monitoring and supporting the casualty
  • Obtaining emergency services or medical assistance
  • Incident communication and documentation

VPAU320 unit

  • Identification of individuals at risk of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Development of a risk assessment
  • Identification of strategies to reduce risk
  • Identification of strategies designed to communicate with key stakeholders to raise awareness of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

Assessment

To be judged competent in unit VBP434 Provide first aid management of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, participants are required to:

  1. Demonstrate competent performance administering an adrenaline auto-injector
  2. Participate in 1 problem-solving scenario and demonstrate the required knowledge and skills to manage a severe allergic reaction - anaphylaxis

To be judged competent in unit VPAU320 Develop risk minimisation and management strategies for allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, participants are required to:

  1. Complete the workbook knowledge questions
  2. Participate in 1 risk minimisation problem-solving exercise in response to identified individuals at risk of allergic reactions which requires a risk assessment and development of risk minimisation and communication strategies to inform key personnel.

OPTION 1 - STANDARD

This program option is intended for first-time learners and first aiders who prefer a training workshop learning environment.

Your trainer works with you and the group, progressing systematically through the course content, drawing on past knowledge and skills. 

A variety of training approaches including class and small group discussions, first aid critical incident scenario simulations, workbook exercises, sustained practice skills, and relevant audiovisual materials are used to support your learning through to the achievement of competency.

OPTION 2 - ONLINE

This online learning program is suited to e-learners and can be completed at your own pace with only a one hour face-to-face workshop session. The delivery is innovative, stimulating and interactive. This course is suited to beginners and those wishing to update their knowledge in anaphylaxis first aid.
