Description
This unit of competency provides participants with the knowledge and skills to establish and manage a workplace first aid facility, manage workplace first aid records, and evaluate the provision of first aid in the workplace.

- Management of a first aid response in an identified workplace context, including coordination of first aid activities until arrival of medical/emergency assistance
- Assessment of workplace first aid requirements
- Maintenance of first aid equipment and resources in operational condition
- First aid risk assessment
- Casualty assessment and prioritisation
- Assessment of need for and obtaining emergency services ormedical assistance
- Cultural sensitivity
- Incident communication and documentation
- Evaluation of the incident
- Interpret, use and maintenance of records of the range of documentation required by the workplace and regulatory authorities
- Critical incident stress management
- Legal and social responsibilities of a first aider
- Material safety data sheets
- Occupational health & safety requirements in the provision of first aid
- Safe storage and handling procedures for medication in the workplace
- Incident management procedures including manual handling; adequate infection control procedures
- Company/organisation standard operating procedures
Entry requirement
This unit should be assessed either after or in conjunction with achievement of the following related competency unit HLTFA402B Apply advanced first aid
Trainer/Assessors
PREMIUMHEALTH provides trainers who are registered nurses or ambulance officers that have at least Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.
Assessment
Students’ performance in relation to the course’s competency elements is assessed.
Award
A Statement of Attainment is issued on successful completion of this course and is current for three years.
