Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia encourage everyone to paint one fingernail this Food Allergy Week 13-19 May 2013

Premium Health - Tuesday, May 14, 2013
1 in 10 babies born in Australia today will develop a food allergy. Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia encourage everyone to paint one fingernail out of ten this Food Allergy Week and donate at www.foodallergyaware.com.au

Paediatric gastroenterologist and Allergist Prof Katie Allen from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute is leading a major research study into food allergies -the first of its kind in the world. The study aims to understand how to prevent food allergy, how to prevent food allergic children from having adverse events and ultimately how to prevent progression of allergic disease later in life.

Prof Allen’s research has found several reasons as to why Australia has the highest reported incidence of food allergy in the world. These include: what food infants eat in the first year of life, their exposure to microbes in the environment and vitamin D deficiency. “What is exciting about these factors is that they are all modifiable and to do with the modern lifestyle. If proven, they may be able to reverse the current food allergy epidemic”, says Prof Allen.

Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia President Maria Said believes Australia was not prepared for, nor is keeping up with, the current prevalence of food allergies: “There is a shortage of allergy resources, including allergy specialists, across the country which means individuals at risk lack timely access to diagnosis. This puts people already at risk of anaphylaxis at an even greater risk because people need to be shown how to manage food allergy in the real world.”

New heart maps reveal heart attack hot spots in Victoria

Premium Health - Thursday, May 02, 2013
Victoria’s top five heart attack hot spots have been revealed in Heart Foundation (Victoria’s) newest tool in the fight against heart attack.

The Victorian Heart Maps, released 1 May, uses the last five years of State Government health data to show how many men and women were hospitalised due to heart attack across Victoria by Local Government Area (LGA).

The data shows 36 out of 48 rural and regional LGAs are above the expected Victorian average for hospitalisation rates due to severe heart attack.

It also reveals 8 of the 31 metropolitan LGAs are above the Victorian average. The 8 LGAs include Melbourne’s poorer suburbs of Hume, Brimbank, Melton, Wyndham, Cardinia, Knox, Casey and Greater Dandenong.

Further analysis shows the Victorian (adjusted) average of 11 people per 10,000 having heart attacks over the past five years.

ABS statistics reveal higher asthma risk for women

Premium Health - Thursday, April 11, 2013
New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed that Australian women are most at risk of dying from asthma, with 263 females dying from the condition in 2011 - more than double the number of males.

In total, 378 deaths were recorded affecting 263 females and 115 males.

The majority of deaths occurred in those aged 45 years and over, with women outstripping men in every 10 year age bracket from 45 upwards.

The greatest number of deaths occurred in those aged over 75 years with 226 deaths recorded (167 females and just 59 males). In contrast to this, there were only 13 deaths in the 25 and under age group.

Overall the asthma death toll dropped by 38, compared with 2010 data.

While this figure marks an encouraging decrease in the overall annual asthma death toll and a positive decline in both male fatalities and deaths amongst younger Australians, the National Asthma Council Australia is warning that there is no room for complacency.

“The drop in the mortality rate has been gradual and progressive over the years, from a peak of 964 deaths in 1989 to the latest toll of 378 in 2011,” noted National Asthma Council Australia Chair, Dr Noela Whitby.

This continues the trend which is due to ongoing education of the health care profession, community and patients with asthma. It also reflects the more aggressive and careful management of people with asthma.

Premium Health offers a 3 hour face-to-face Asthma management course, or the course can be conducted online with a 1 hour face-to-face assessment.

The course covers:
- Signs and symptoms of asthma
- Common asthma triggers
- First aid principles and procedures in relation to the causes, symptoms and treatment of asthma
- Asthma action plans and emergency asthma management protocol
- Risk minimisation strategies and development of a risk minimisation plan

Media Release - Premium Health Calls for Tougher Regulation of the First Aid Industry

Premium Health - Monday, April 08, 2013

The article ‘First aid, second rate’ in The Age on 4 April 2013 raised concerns regarding the state of Victoria’s first aid services at public events.

Premium Health CEO Natalie Donohoe says this concern should extend to the first aid industry as a whole.

Donohoe says, “In our opinion, there are a number of non-registered training organisations that are providing dubious and sub-standard training and we would welcome more stringent regulation of the first aid industry.”

“Companies looking for a first aid training provider need to make sure they conduct due diligence before they make their decision. Quality should not be compromised over price as this could end up costing the organisation in compensation, or worse someone’s life,” she says.

“To make an informed decision when choosing a first aid provider, Workplace safety managers should consider more than just price.”

“First aid training should be about providing participants with the skills and knowledge to act confidently in an emergency situation. It should not just be a tick in the compliance box,” she says.

Premium Health recommends companies seeking to protect their staff and organisation should ask the following questions when investigating a first aid provider:
• Is the training provider a registered training organisation?
• What are the qualifications of its Trainers?
• How current are the qualifications of Trainers and do they undergo regular professional development activities?
• If the course hours are significantly shorter than industry standard, ask the question ‘What’s being left out?’
• Does the training provider hold sufficient professional indemnity insurance?

Premium Health is a registered training organisation that has been delivering first aid, CPR and specialised health training courses for over 25 years. Premium Health trains over 35,000 people in first aid and specialised health training courses annually. For more information visit the website www.premiumhealth.com.au

Defibrillators - a hot topic at the Safety in Action expo

Premium Health - Wednesday, March 27, 2013
The Safety in Action show in Melbourne finished up last Thursday and again proved to be this year’s main event for all workplace safety products and services in Melbourne.

Premium Health CEO, Natalie Donohoe, commented that defibrillators were a hot topic. “We were demonstrating the latest Powerheart G5 defibrillator at our stand and it attracted a lot of interest from the crowd.”

“What happens in the first few minutes following a sudden cardiac arrest can be the difference between life and death. Having a defibrillator available in the workplace provides enormous peace of mind and really does save lives.” Donohoe said.

The Powerheart G5 is an automated external defibrillator which combines variable escalating energy with fast shock times and real-time CPR feedback.

To purchase a defibrillator or speak to a consultant for more information, contact Premium Health on 1300 721 292.

Know how to respond to a bite or sting this summer

Premium Health - Tuesday, February 19, 2013

Australia is home to some of the most venomous creatures in the world, make sure you are prepared this summer to handle the bite or sting of any creepy crawlies that might come your way.

The purpose of first aid for bites and stings is to stop the venom spreading away from the bitten area and attacking vital organs of the body or to respond effectively in response to an allergic reaction to a bite or sting.

With prompt effective first aid management, the casualty may require less antitoxin or other treatment/s upon arrival at the hospital.

Signs and symptoms to look out for:

  • bite/sting marks
  • pain
  • itchy rash
  • sweating
  • nausea/vomiting
  • headache
  • respiratory weakness
  • muscle spasm
  • collapse

How to manage a bite/sting incident:

Initiate the first aid priority action plan (DRSABCD) and include the following actions:

  • Establish the history:
    • What time was the casualty bitten or stung?
    • Was the casualty able to identify the creature involved?
    • Does the casualty have a known allergy to the creature?
  • Manage the casualty according to the type of bite or sting.
  • Lie the casualty down and reassure.
  • Observe for and manage allergic reactions.
  • Seek medical assistance.

For more information check out our video clip: Bites and stings

For advice concerning any envenomation call the Australian Venom Research unit 24 hour advisory line 1300 760 451 or visit www.avru.org.
